Has anyone every sold something over the internet? Last night I posted my Mac on Craigslist. There's someone who is interested in it and asked if I would be willing to do a combination of cash and paypal. Is this fishy or something that routinely happens? I don' know much about paypal to know. I've never bought or sold anything from a private party online before.

hmm, that does sound fishy.

i have had serious issues with craigslist and ebay (those fraudulent african bidders and everything)

insist he pay either by paypal entirely or cash in hand at the time of the transaction. if you doubt it for a second don't go for it. trust your instincts.

I don't understand why he'd want to use PayPal. PayPal goes directly in and out of your bank account. ...unless of course it's not his account or is planning on trying to try to reverse the transaction.

Sounds sketchy. Not worth it. I'd stick to your guns. I've always gotten more than one legit inquiry on anything I've listed on Craigslist.

The only legit reason I could think of is if he's trying to pay partially with credit card, in which case your PayPal account would have to be setup for that, and you'd pay a fee.

i would think he wants to put part on his credit card, too. doesn't sound fishy to me.

how much are you selling it for?

IAWTC. Check with the person to find out their intentions, and make sure you include any applicable PayPal fees in the asking price so you don't get gypped.

I added you because of you didn't spell it "jipped". It's cute and closer to fine.

Yeah, the combo payment sounds fishy... there's no reason I can think of why someone would want to do that unless it was somehow fraudulent.

I use paypal all the time, with no issues, but I've never done anything on craig's list because they're all perverts and sociopaths.

I'd also insist on 100% cash. Paypal has some pretty good online purchasing protections. You'd have to set up an account first. But this doesn't sound right.

A good rule to live by, would be to only accept cash or certified funds only.

i've never had a problem with paypal, and i use it all the time. in the few instances where someone has asked if they could purchase something using both cash and paypal, it's usually because they didn't have enough cash on hand, and they wanted to charge a portion to their credit card. (i've had a handful of transactions like that, and i've never been screwed.)

the most important thing to remember--always: do not ship the mac until you've received payment in full. (if someone wants to pay cash, insist on a cashier's check or money order--and then wait until you've actually negotiated the item.)

i don't know much about craigslist, but if it's anything like ebay, check out the individual's history. have they had their account long? have they received positive feedback? are there any comments from other sellers who've sold to this person?

like someone mentioned earlier: if you have any reservations at all, don't chance it.

good luck.

xo

craiglist should have sent or directed you to a "how to recognize fraud" page. i'd consult that.

So you decided you weren't a Mac person after all?

I have used Paypal regularly and never had a problem. You can even set up your paypal account so it will not accept credit cards. Just be careful and don't react to the scammers who will ask you for your Paypal account info -- all they need is the email address.

I'm just glad I'm not the only one who's never sold something over the 'net. We should get a mascot.

Any reason you don't want to go through eBay solely, not that I would ever tout the horn of horrid, wretched former parent company?

ebay is hard if your a first time seller,i would recommend if you haven't sold to list with a ebay store in your area, with craigslist I would recommend a cashiers check or money order, I might seem paranoid but I've been burned when buying a computer, I paid for it and it never showed up,thank god I put on my credit card and was refunded.... be careful!
