Memorial Day Weekend
Dustin and I have decided to go to San Francisco for Memorial Day weekend. We've both been wanting to go and my brother leaves Continental in 2 weeks, leaving that weekend my last weekend to travel for free.

Does anyone have hotels they recommend that aren't expensive and are in ok areas? I know squat about San Fran.

Staying at my mom's in Lafayette, which is about 20 miles or so east of San Francisco.

The only times I've stayed in a hotel in SF, we paid about $400/night. Granted, that was with my parents and we were staying at 3-4 star executive hotels, but I've heard it's an expensive town for lodging no matter what. I'd suggest fisherman's wharf, the financial district and anything along the main drags in the Castro.

okay, so it looks like you can do good lodging in the high 100s, i would stay somewhere kitschy like hotel kabuki but i know the city pretty well as this point so location wouldn't be a huge sell for me.

Definitely not going to spend $400! Thanks for the suggestions on area though. :-)

Ugh. Thanks for the warning. I'll be sure to get the GPS system with my rental car.

I highly recommend the Hayes Valley Inn: http://www.hayesvalleyinn.com/. It's cute, cozy and (by SF standards) cheap. My parents stay there when visiting the city. (I used to live there and my sister still does.) These days the best shopping in the city is in Hayes.

It's cute, and right in the heart of Hayes Valley, one of my favorite neighborhoods. Also, Hayes Valley is kind of smack in the middle of the city, so you can walk to the Castro, Haight, Union Square and other neighborhoods. You are also very close to all the forms of public transportation.

The Best Western Civic Center is also a good choice, also centrally located. I'd also honestly recommend against Fisherman's Wharf or anything over in the Pier 39, Lombard, Marina, Wharf area. You can go over there to do the tourist stuff, but using that as a home base is tough because those areas are pretty removed from the rest of the city.

Another fun pick is the Beck's Motor Lodge in the Castro. (http://www.becksmotorlodgesf.com/) It's similarly cheap, kitschy and sort of a Castro institution in a delightfully tacky way. There's lots of small inns in the Castro, but I honestly think the neighborhood is over-rated. If you don't live a big city it's amazing, but New Yorker might find it kind of a yawn.

Safety-wise, the only areas I would warn against these days are the inner Tenderloin (Polk street near Civic Center) and the lower Mission (places on numbered streets -- not avenues above 20). The rest of the city is all very safe.

Hope you have fun! I was just out there about four weeks ago and it was (as always) wonderful.

Thanks for the suggestions! Beck's motor lodge seems like a popular pick.

I've heard from others as well that Castro is over-rated and I should only visit, not stay in that part of town. Being a former New Yorker, I don't want to stay in an area that I would find to be a yawn.

LOL, that's how I am. An area sounds cool, but is it really??

That hotel looks really cool! I love the decor. I'll check it out. :-)

Your best bet is Hotel Diva. It was the first boutique hotel in San Francisco and has aged well. I stayed there last week for $120 a night for work. Great bet. Hotel Triton, recommended above, is also a really good property, though a bit more expensive. The best deal you are going to find in town is Hotel Metropolis. Here's the deal with Metropolis - it's a boutique hotel, a really good property, but it is one block into the Tenderloin. Basically, that means that there will be crack-heads outside. But, like I said, it is only one block in, so in forty paces, you are on public transportation/in Union Square and because they built this hotel one block west of where they should have, it is ridiculously cheap.

Hey Hottness-
Check out The Handlery right across from Union Square. Nice classy but small and hidden place. Great location and prices were good when I have stayed.
Estuardo/
